Reading across archives, canons, and continents, Lowe connects the liberal narrative of freedom overcoming slavery to the expansion of Anglo-American empire, observing that abstract promises of freedom often obscure their embeddedness within colonial conditions.
The text is clear but decidedly “academic”, so if you’re out cintinents school practice you’ll have to put o your best thinking cap.
Lowe examines how The Interesting Narrativestriving to become legible within a genre, produces a very specific narrative of individual development and achievement that masks the collective intimacies at work in the grind of empire.
