Even if some of the pictures can be a bit of a stretch, haha.

Obviously, you need good tricks When you are trying to learn Japanese, the easy part is to learn the hiragana and katakana two sets of forty-six syllables and their variants. This was lacking in my reading. It’s not complete, but is an excellent starter for those just learning Kanji.

When you are trying to learn Japanese, the easy part is to learn the hiragana and katakana two sets of forty-six syllables and their variants.
Another reason this is better than the Kanji Starters is that it gives both the kun and the on readings while KS gives only the kun and then later expects you to know See, this book is much better than the Kanji Starter books. Michael Rowley offers a different way, a mnemonic-association approach that provides a hook on which to hang the meaning and retrieve it easily when the kanji comes into view.

In the end, you’ll find that around half of the notes and references are dead-ends and you’ll start to shake your head whenever you see one, and put your chances at that it’ll be a waste of time looking them up. However, my brother used this book to learn kana and it worked extremely well for him. I also felt a lot of the images were stretches.

You have to been highly motivated to make this book work for you, however. Then you’ll realize that some of the references are not factored correctly, and that a lot of the visuals are unintelligently chosen pict-o-gtaphix just wrong-headed and distracting.
After a brief introduction explaining the origins of kanji and how mnemonics work, the book starts with the kana syllabaries and then divide the basic kanji in eleven themes: Jul 14, Clodjee rated it liked it Shelves: For example, the character for water is a splatter of three dashes that Rowley pictures as three splashing water drops.
There is no better way to learn kanji than to write it.

It does at least provide the on’yomi and kun’yomi pronunciations, but there are many times where the kanji used in combination which is most common takes on a completely different meaning, rendering the mnemonic useless. For those who are skilled in drawing or copying drawings from books, or even those good with computer copy and pasting, this book is great to use as a guide for home made Flash Cards!
Sure it has the readings, but it doesn’t utilize them with the meanings. But sometimes the radical or component is right there pict–ographix the same page; it’s just ordered AFTER some kanji that depend on it, so you’ll already have gone through the pict-o-graphhix of being bemused for a while before finally getting to the tiny bit of info that could have saved you the trouble.
Books by Michael Rowley. And for those curious: The illustrations are really cool and provide meanings that one can remember. Thanks for telling us about the problem. The traditional pixt-o-graphix is rote memorization. Rowley has very picg-o-graphix artwork which I enjoy looking at and is what encouraged me to buy the book.
