The plot of Blood Pact somewhat mirrors that of Traitor Generalwith Etogaur Mabbon in nlood of Noches Sturmbut differs with the assassination squad holding the upper hand over their target’s captors. Gaunt doesn’t trust Mabbon, he’d be crazy to, but the Blood Pact’s blitz forces him to keep Mabbon alive long enough to try and learn what’s going on.

At first it was reading like Traitor General, only abbnett was the exact opposite. All due to Rawne being ‘really fething bored’. But before the prisoner can speak, the base is attacked by enemy agents, set on killing the prisoner before he can talk.

Not the best of Dan Abnett’s “Gaunt’s Ghosts” series, but pretty high up there. Not only that, dn Dan Abnett is a writer who has a flair for characterisation and action, a trait that should be both applauded and envied. In a good sense. Great book, love his work.

The prisoner insists that he wishes to help blold Imperium, but this claim is met with skepticism by Gaunt. Much better than the last two books. He proves to have known of him from his work on Gereon.

Blood Pact After the gruelling events on Jago, the Tanith First is removed from active service for the first time since its founding and sent to Balhaut to perform garrison duties. This book felt more like a “prologue” to the next book which is set up to be a doozy. Each time Abnett turns his attention back abnettt Gaunt and company, he goes some way to reimagining the science-fiction war novel.


The novel also provides greater detail of Gaunt’s past tour on Balhaut during his service with the Hyrkan 8th, before the founding of the Tanith First-and-Only.

With heretical witchcraft influencing the populace and a determined hunter pursuing them, who can Gaunt turn to for aid? But then Gaunt is called in to help with the interrogation of a prisoner, who claims to have vital information he will reveal only to Gaunt. The ending reveals a connection that a minor character had absolutely no right to. Gaunt and his men have spent two years recuperating on a world slowly recovering from the effects of war, and they are getting bored.

Now I have to admit, after reading Sabbat Worlds, I was a little worried about this one. Perhaps it’s due to the increasing frequency between novels Blood Pact was released in and one more book, Salvation’s Reach, in with nothing sincebut Blood Pact feels a little like too much set-up at a moment in the series when it feels like it should be perhaps more decisively moving towards a conclusion.
