I struggled to get into it. I have just re read this debut book and the beginning of the trilogy. A stunning, epic novel of war, savagery and heroism. Moreover, the historical characters, including Baybars, are characterized believably and judiciously, based on available information about them.

The one character who did have substance was Baybars. As I read this tale, I kept thinking about the Roman Republic and its putative checks and balances.
